Japan’s Soma receives first biomass cargo

Japanese electricity producer and wholesaler Soma Kyodo Power has taken delivery of around 5,000t of China-origin wood pellet at the import terminal serving its 2,000MW Shinchi coal-fired plant in northeastern Fukushima prefecture. Soma plans to start co-firing wood pellet and coal at the plant’s 1,000MW No.1 and No.2 units early next month, with the biomass throughput ratio at around 3pc on a thermal basis. The company is expected to use up to 140,000 t/yr of wood pellet and around 5mn t/yr of coal, helping reduce CO2 emissions by 230,000 t/yr.
