Wheels in motion

In most cases, ASEAN free trade zones (FTZs) appear to have been very successful, as witnessed by the growth that has taken place in ports such as Singapore, Laem Chabang, and Port Tanjung Pelapas (PTP). Even in China, the creation of special economic zones has contributed to the robust growth in that country's container throughput volumes. Shenzhen, Shanghai and Tianjin, in particular, have benefited from having industrial enterprise and/or FTZs in their back doors.
