MDS Transmodal's analysis of interregional loaded containerised traffic to and from the Far East is that inbound TEU grew by some 16 between 2005 and 2007 and outbound TEU grew by 22. These estimates are based on customs data and include only the proportion of each commodity generally containerised in the headhaul direction into Europe and North America. What is not included is further bulk cargo carried in containers in the back haul direction because this tonnage is driven by supply factors (the availability of spare capacity) rather than demand factors.
