Against the grain

As has been widely publicised over the past few months, with the publication of the EC's Council Regulation No 1419/2006 replacing 4056/86, anti-trust immunity in the liner trades to/ from Europe will be abolished from October 2008. UK-based liner shipping economist and academic Dr Rawindaran Nair noted, in CI's recent analysis of this development (see 'Sounding off, July 2007, p72): 'With the repeal of the exemption from the EU's rules on competition, the future appears challenging for global carriers, shippers and the logistics industry.'
