EU's new car registrations fall sharply in 2020

New car registrations in the EU declined at a record rate in 2020 as lockdowns during the Covid-19 pandemic dented both production and demand. Registrations fell by 23.7pc in 2020, down to 9.9mn units, in what the European Automotive Manufacturers Association (ACEA) said was a “direct result” of the pandemic. It is the largest drop in new car registrations since records began.
