Is the big bang about to hit the container liner shipping industry? All this talk of equipment and capacity shortages with record high peak season surcharges being introduced by several carriers, including Maersk Line, which is imposing a USDl,000/40ft and USD750/20ft premium on cargo moving from Asia to Europe from July 15, appears to belie global economic factors and the huge amount of sovereign debt that prevails in many countries. In many respects it does appear as if the world is wrapped up in the 'good feel factor' surrounding the African continent's first hosting of the FIFA world cup soccer championships.
