IMO inches forward on shipping emissions

The International Maritime Organi-sation's (IMO) was forced to use majority voting rights to keep its greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions initiatives on track at the March meeting of its Marine Environment Protection Committee (MEPC). Despite opposition from developing countries such as China and India, the London meeting agreed by majority to make the Energy Efficiency Design Index (EEDI) and Ship Energy Efficiency Management Plan (SEEMP) mandatory under MARPOL Annex VI.
