Back from the brink

While the February 27,2010, earthquake, which measured a massive 8.8 on the Richter scale, caused significant damage and disruption to Chile's infrastructure and business practices, the country's fruit industry has staged a relatively quick recovery. It could have been much worse, given that the earthquake took place at the end of week eight which is at the start of the fruit export industry's busiest period. Indeed, between the last week in February and the end of March, over 30% of Chile's annual fruit exports are moved. It amounts to estimated volumes of 200,000 tonnes a week.
