How the China/South Korea trade fared in 2009

The South Korea to China market has been impacted by the global economic downturn. By value trade fell by 26.9% in the first half of 2009 compared to the same period in 2008, according to COSCON. According to MDS Transmodal, the dominant leg, from China to South Korea, fell by 3.2% in 2008 compared to the previous year, down to 1.21 million TEU shipped. However, volumes for the first three quarters of last year plunged 19% to 767,101TEU year-on-year (see table). Before the downturn, the tradelane was growing, with a huge increase of 48% between volume carried in 2008 compared to 2004 (see table).
