Japanese carriers sink into the red

NYK, MOL and K Line sank into the red in the first half of their financial year ended September 30,2011. NYK's revenue compared to the same period last year fell by 10.1%, to USD11.35 billion. This resulted in an operational loss (EBIT) of USD120.4 million which, in turn, led to a net loss of USD150.3 million on the bottom line. This was a sharp decline compared with the USD530.3 million net profit made in the corresponding period of the last financial year (see table).
