BUILT TO ENDURE

The trade between the US mainland and Alaska is facing several challenges this year, having been hit hard by the global economic crisis and new environmental regulations being put io place for ocean carriers (see panel on next page). According to Totem Ocean Trailer Express (TOTE), overall container volumes on the Alaskan trade fell by about 13% last year, to just under lO.OOOTEU. TOTE is among the major players in the market and along with Horizon Lines carries about 70% of the business. The remainder of the market is split between barge operators (25%) and road haulage companies (5%).
