The past decade has seen container traffic volumes on most liner trades to/ from the Middle East post consistent and relatively strong rates of growth. In 2011, the region accounted for about 19% of world container trade and significantly ahead of its share of 13% in 2000 and 15% in 2010. Speaking at Containehsation International's 2nd Middle East Liner Shipping Conference, held in Dubai in January, Mathijs Slangen, maritime advisor at the Amsterdam-based Seabury Group, pointed to the improved ranking of all of the main Middle East liner trades since 2000. 'Consistently these trades have registered volume gains with the Far East-Middle East/ South Asia trade now the fourth largest in the world, up from fifth, the Europe-Middle East/ South Asia route rising from sixth to fifth, and the intra-Middle East-South Asia trade leaping from 10th to seventh.'
