The average utilisation of all vessels sailing from Asia to West Africa (defined as ports between Monrovia (Liberia) and Luanda (Angola) inclusive) is expected to reach 95% in Ql 12, assuming another year of strong cargo growth (upl5%). It is expected to peak at 99% in Q3 12 before falling back slightly to 93% in the final three months of the year. Although this should theoretically put ocean carriers in a very strong freight rate negotiating position, direct service providers, whose schedule reliability has never been good, face increasing competition from transhipping cargo in the Mediterranean.
