Maersk Line has dealt a serious blow to the Panama Canal by shifting its Asia-US east coast service to a Suez Canal routing in a move that will absorb tonnage and cut costs.High tolls and the relatively small ships that can transit the canal have forced Maersk and other carriers to look at alternative ways to serve the US eastern seaboard, with the Suez Canal regarded as a viable option for cargo moving out of ports as far north as Shanghai.
