What is the optimal blood glucose range to improve morbidity and mortality in surgical patients?

We read with great interest the article published in Annals of Surgery titled "Glucose Control in Severely Thermally Injured Pediatric Patients: What Glucose Range Should be the Target?" by Jeschke et al. The authors suggest that in severely burned patients, a blood glucose concentration of 130 mg/dL should be the target to improve morbidity and mortality. In various surgical conditions, detection of the optimal blood glucose range is important to improve surgical outcomes for critically ill surgical patients. This is especially true for diabetic patients, because perioperative hyper-glycemia increases the risk of postoperative infections. In the absence of any relevant prior scientific evidence, this is the first report to clarify the issue. Of note was the absence of any deaths in the group with good control of glucose levels.
