The Leading European freight forwarders have this year adopted different strategies to deal with weak volume growth and rates coming under pressure. The world's top two ocean freight forwarders are posting lower year-on-year volume growth percentages than some of their competitors, who have followed a strategy of growing faster than the market. The freight forwarder that appears to have taken the strictest line on what cargo it carries is DHL Global Forwarding. Duringthe first nine months of the year, the Bonn-headquartered company has reported a 1.8% year-on-year decline in ocean freight volumes to 2.1m teu. The decline was most pronounced duringthe third quarter of the year, which is the traditional peak season for the Asia-Europe and transpacific trade lanes, when its volumes declined by 2.4% compared with last year to 733,000 teu.
