We discuss the influence of the deviation between the reference atmosphere and the actual atmosphere on the effective instrument function method for atmospheric remote sensing inversion and present an alternative method--the circulation method--that was developed from the effective instrument function method. The computation time for this method is greater than that of the effective instrument function method but does not need a priori information about atmospheric parameter profiles. # 1997 Optical Society of America
