New Zealand: Section 3 - Force Structures

The New Zealand Defence Force (NZDF) is a fully professional service. Service is voluntary, and there is no conscription. The Defence Capability Plan released in November 2016 outlines the country's force structure plans out to 2030 and covers $20 billion worth of capital investment. That plan is currently under review, with a replacement expected under the successor government - which published its own Strategic Defence Policy Statement on July 6, 2018. The current strength of the Army consists of three organizations: the HQ Joint Deployable Task Force based in Burnham, the HQ 1 (NZ) Brigade based in Linton, and the HQ Training and Doctrine Command in Waiouru. There is also the NZSAS (New Zealand Special Air Services) Regiment based in Papakura. In addition, there is a non-regular Territorial Force composed of six regionally based battalions. The Royal New Zealand Navy (RNZN) comprises two core forces: the Naval Combat Force (NCF) consisting of frigates and patrol/coastal vessels, and the Navy Support Force (NSF) consisting of logistics and support vessels. The Navy's main base is in Auckland. The Royal New Zealand Air Force (RNZAF) has major air bases in Auckland, Ohakea, and Woodbourne.
