Total Shoulder Versus Hemiarthroplasty: Elements in Decision Making

The first reported shoulder arthroplasty was performed in 1893 by Pean.Neer ushered in the modern era of total shoulder replacement in the early 1970s when he modified his original humeral prosthesis and included a glenoid component.Since that time, controversy has surrounded the indications for replacing the glenoid in primary osteoarthritis and other arthritic conditions of the shoulder (Fig. 1). Proponents of both hemiarthroplasty and total shoulder arthroplasty (TSR) exist, but no uniform consensus has yet been reached.
