Management of Glenoid Bone Deficiency in Total Shoulder Arthroplasty for Osteoarthritis

Glenohumeral osteoarthritis associated with glenoid bone deficiency represents one of the most challenging situations in primary shoulder arthroplasty surgery. Recognizing significant glenoid deficiency preoperatively is critical for the surgeon contemplating methods to deal with the bone loss. The purpose of this review is to introduce the methods by which glenoid deficiency is assessed preoperatively and to describe the various techniques such as eccentrically reaming, bone grafting and capsular plication, which may be used to effectively address this difficult condition.
