The B-cell compartment has been disclosing its complexity recently as a consequence of intensive research into the ontogeny and functions of its cells and their products, the antibodies. Recent studies investigating humoral immune responses have focused on the appearance of self-destructive auto-antibodies and strategies to counteract their action in autoimmune disorders for therapeutic, clinical use.The aim of 2009's Ruggero Ceppellini Advanced School of Immunology, held from 5-7 November 2009 in Sorrento (Naples), Italy, and sponsored in part by EFIS-EJI monies, was to give the attendees an overview of the most recent advances regarding the classification of the different components of the B-cell compartment in terms of their ontogeny, phenotype, commitment, antigen reactivity and regulation. Attention was also dedicated to the problem of the anti-self immune response, discussing current attempts to therapeutically manipulate the autoanti-body-producing cells to cure devastating autoimmune diseases such as systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE).
