Modular Metallic Radial Head Replacement

The presentation of radial head fractures ranges from simple undisplaced fractures to complex injuries associated with elbow and wrist instability. Although the majority of fractures can be managed nonoperatively or with open reduction and internal fixation, prosthetic replacement of the radial head is indicated for displaced comminuted fractures that are not reconstructable. Radial head arthroplasty is also used for malunions, nonunions, posttraumatic arthritis, and instability. Accurate implant sizing and attention to associated osseous and soft tissue injuries is the key to a successful result. The medium term outcome of metallic radial head arthroplasty is encouraging; however, long-term follow-up studies are needed.
