According to John Auers (of Turner, Mason Co. but writing for RBN Energy), PADD 4 refiners were on easy street last year. Local crude production in the region has been booming, and together with incoming volumes from Canada, about 180K b/d of crude were actually shipped out of the region in 2013. Moreover, in contrast to the rest of the US, product demand has been rising in the region by about 0.5/y over the past six years in spite of increasingly stringent fuel efficiency standards that have been pushing demand down elsewhere in the country.
