BASF, Linde collaborate for on-purpose butadiene.

The two European firms will work together to develop an on-purpose process for the production of butadiene. BASF will supply a novel monolithic catalyst for the synthesis of butane to butenes. This catalyst contains a precious metal and is said to improve efficiency when compared to other technologies while also providing a high yield of butenes. BASF will also provide a mixed-metal oxide catalyst for the oxydehydrogenation of these butenes into butadiene, with the mixed-metal oxide catalyst said to be high in activity and selectivity for butadiene. An extraction technology to recover butadiene will also be provided by BASF. Commenting on the development of the technology the senior vice president Global Technology of BASF Petrochemicals division said, "The new BASF technology is currently being developed by mini-plant (kg scale) and pilot-plant (500 kg/h) operation. We are optimistic that we can offer a new best-in-class technology for the manufacturing of on-purpose butadiene."
