摘要

World Health Organization estimates (WHO 2013) have further solidified the place of violence against women in the public health sphere, showing that worldwide, 35% of women have experienced either physical and/or sexual intimate partner violence or nonpartner sexual violence, typically coupled with the dire consequences that accompany such violence. Among ever-partnered women, the prevalence of physical and/or sexual intimate partner violence was highest in World Health Organization Regions such as Africa, where about 37% reported having ever had this experience. The focus of this special issue of Ethnicity and Health on gendered violence, and on sub-Saharan Africa in particular, is therefore both timely and appropriate. In Kenya and Rwanda — the focal countries for this collection of papers - 21% and 22%, respectively, of women in the reproductive age range, reported ever experiencing sexual violence in particular (KNBS and ICF Macro 2010; NISR, MOH, and ICF International 2012).
