Might measuring cord pH in itself affect outcome?

Malin and colleagues confirmed the expected association between low arterial cord pH and poor outcome. However, caution should be applied before encouraging routine blood gas measurement-usually performed after premature cord clamping, <30 seconds after birth. There was no indication of cord clamping and neonatal resuscitation practices used in the studies which might plausibly adversely affect, or even explain, the relation. Cord pH is an intervention driven by secondary medicolegal concerns without evidence of benefit. Premature cord clamping decreases the term baby's blood volume, packed cell volume, and ferritin values.
