PSA Peugeot Citroen's stop-start diesel future

PSA Peugeot Citroen spent {EUR}300m and 36 months integrating the Valeo i-Stars stop-start system with its 1.4- and 1.6-litre HDi diesels, and by the end of 2012 the company expects to have sold 1 million such engines. The micro hybrid system adds no torque to the wheels, and thus does not qualify as a hybrid in today's industrial language, but it continues to be a marketing term. The stop-start system alone delivers a 5g/km fuel savings in the city-highway New European Driving Cycle, and the improvement in typical urban driving is 15%, according to Jean-Marc Gales, Executive Vice President, Automobiles Citroen.
