Association between ALDH2 Glu504Lys Polymorphism and Susceptibility to Coronary Artery Disease and Myocardial Infarction: Need for Clarification of Data in a Recent Meta-analysis

We recently read with great interest the recent paper by Gu et al. (1). The authors conducted a meta-analysis of eight case-control studies and one cohort to examine the association between ALDH2 Glu504Lys polymorphism and the risk of coronary artery disease (CAD) and myocardial infarction (MI) in Asians. Their meta-analysis provides the evidence that ALDH2 Glu504Lys polymorphism may be associated with increased risk of CAD and MI in East Asians, especially among Chinese and Korean populations. It is an interesting study. Nevertheless, we would like to raise some concerns related to this article.First, at least one eligible study with 546 CAD cases and 546 controls was not included in this meta-analysis according to the inclusion criteria (2). Actually, the genotype frequencies of the Glu504Lys polymorphism on MI risk in this study could be obtained when carefully reading the full texts. We believed that the bias would be introduced into the results of the meta-analysis due to this shortage.
