An irrigation chamber was used by Cavanagh and colleagues7 to harvest human corneal epithelial cells from patients wearing conventional hydrogel and silicone hydrogel contact lenses. These cells were mixed with P. aeruginosa and the extent of bacterial binding to the epithelial cells was assessed. They demonstrated a significantly lower level of binding when silicone hydrogel lenses were worn and went on to suggest that these lenses '. . . should result in a decrease in the incidence of and risk(s) for lens-related microbial keratitis.'
