US steel inventories poised to build with import arrivals

As US steel mills continue to restrict order entry, steel consumers have been looking to imports to ensure supply. Some service centres have had to decline to quote business because orders running late have driven inventories to uncomfortable lows. Steel Market Update, which is part of CRU, reported that service centres carried 41.4 shipping days of supply at the end of March. Though y/y comparisons would be skewed by the Covid-19 shutdowns in March 2020, the data shows that inventories have barely recovered from the low of 40 shipping days of supply reached in November.
