The Southwest Research Institute (SWRI) in the US is developing a pilot plant based on a flameless, pressurized oxyfuel combustion process that will allow for the capture of 100 of CO2 emissions from a coal-fired power plant. This oxyfuel combustion process will utilize an air separation unit (ASU) to generate O2, which will react with pulverized coal in a pressurized reactor. The reactor can be operated in either Brayton- or Rankine-cycle modes, under an environment of supercritical CO2 to generate an exhaust stream of concentrated and pressurized CO2. Commenting on the technology the program director for machinery, fluids and machinery engineering at SWRI Klaus Brun remarked, "Supercritical CO2 has good thermodynamic properties, so that oxyfuel combustion technology allows power-generation that is more efficient than a conventional steam Rankine cycle. This technology also eliminates CO2 emissions, since we are able to capture all of the CO2 from combustion."
