Delegates at Petrospot's Middle East Bunkering Convention in Dubai said they expect demand for marine fuels this year to remain in line with 2016 consumption levels due to a number of factors including bearish demand fundamentals due to the use of larger vessels and more fuel-efficient technology in the marine sector, implementation of new sulfur regulations, weaker global economic output, and the expectation of protectionist trade policies under the Trump Administration. J. Stephen Simms, principal at Simms Showers LLP, remarked "There will be more protectionism even though we would all like to believe there will be free trade. Nationalism will likely rise in global politics and it will be a challenge for our industry."
