According to a Jan. 24 statement from the US Department of Energy (DoE), the two companies have purchased a total of 6.4MM bbl of crude from the US Strategic Petroleum Reserve (SPR). Most of the oil—6.2MM bbl—was bought by Royal Dutch Shell, while Phillips. 66 took the other 200K bbl. Shell will take 1.7MM bbl of the crude by tanker, with the rest to shipped by pipeline. P66 bid $53.8985/bbl for its oil, the statement said, while Shell made multiple bids ranging from $53.668/bbl to $54.338/bbl. Benchmark WTI settled at $51.08/bbl on Jan. 18, the day of the auction.
