A 20% tax on sugar sweetened drinks is estimated to reduce the number of obese adults in the UK by 180000, or 1.3%, with similar effects seen across all income groups. WHAT IS KNOWN AND WHATTHIS PAPER ADDS Regular consumption of sugar sweetened drinks increases the risk of obesity, and some UK health organisations have called fora tax to reduce their intake. A 20% tax on sugar sweetened drinks is predicted to significantly reduce both their consumption and the number of obese adults in the UK.
