Manfred D. Muenter, MD (1934-2021)

Professor Manfred Muenter, MD, passed away earlier this year at age 87. He was Emeritus Mayo Clinic Staff, having been a full-time Mayo neurologist for 28 years, especially focusing on Parkinson disease (PD). Manfred Muenter was born in Berlin, Germany, and received his MD from Berlin Freie Universitaet (1958). After internship-residency training, he completed his neurology residency at Mayo Clinic, Rochester, before joining the Mayo staff in 1967. He was a full-time clinical neurologist in Rochester until transferring to the newly established Mayo Clinic in AZ in 1987 where he became the first chairman of the neurology department. Professor Muenter had a vision for the department to become the leading academic neurology department in the southwest United States, and despite great pressure to support the clinical shield, he was able to build the research and education shields to international prominence. He was an outstanding clinician and mentor to many of the junior faculty hired to grow the department. He retired from the Mayo staff in 1995 and worked as a consultant neurologist to C.T.H.M. King Faisal of Saudi Arabia and at the King Faisal Specialist Hospital and Research Centre before retiring to Fountain Hills, AZ.
