SIEMENS VDO is showcasing a range of new technologies at the Convergence 2006. The company has developed two new electronic system concepts: New Battery and Energy Management (BEM) solutions promise to help vehicles meet increased demand for electrical energy. The Intelligent Battery Sensor (IBS) innovation is scheduled to go into series production in 2008 on European passenger vehicle applications. The IBS helps to optimise the battery's electrical energy resource and measures battery current, voltage and temperature for any new or aged lead acid battery. The Battery Monitoring System (BMS) is expected to lower vehicle breakdowns by up to 80% due to reduced battery drainage and advising drivers on battery replacement; reduce battery warranty cost through failure mode detection and also reduce carbon dioxide (CO_2) emissions by using reliable battery status; The Electronic Scope Network (esconet) domain concept for commercial vehicles is a modular electronic architecture which is expected to decrease the amount of network onboard wiring, reducing weight and thereby allowing an increase in cargo load or improved fuel economy. The company claims that this domain concept provides commercial vehicle manufacturers a flexible and innovative solution to manage the complex electrical network functionality throughout the entire vehicle by replacing point-to-point harnessing with intelligent logic controllers and power distribution modules. The concept reduces the reliance upon multiple bundles of wiring and unreliable harness connections, which in turn reduces potential system failure, lowering development costs and maintenance requirements.
