US: Michelin develops self-regenerating tread technology

MICHELIN Retread Technologies (MRT) has developed the first self-regenerating retread, the Michelin XDA Hypersipe, which uses Michelin-patented tread design and siping technology to mould tread features on both the top and bottom of a Pre-Cure tread band. Sipes moulded into the bottom of the tread appear as the tyre wears, thereby improving worn traction over the life of the retread. The bottom sipes that appear at approximately half tread depth last down to the last usable 32/nd of tread, the company states. This gives the retreaded tyre better traction at reduced tread depth.
