Ireland: NEC Electronics to close semiconductor plant

JAPANESE electronics manufacturer NEC Electronics has announced the closure of its semiconductor plant in Meath, Ireland, as part of its ongoing cost reduction programme, reports Fin Facts. All operations from NEC Semiconductors Ireland will now be transferred to the facility in Malaysia where operating costs are comparatively lower than in Ireland. The move will result in 350 job cuts. Talks are reportedly underway regarding a redundancy package for the workers. NEC Electronics reported a loss of ￥2.6bn (US$22.4m) in the third quarter, due to unexpectedly low sales and falling prices. Since then, the company has been restructuring its business to reduce production costs and increase sales.
