US: New vehicle battery technology secures patent

FIREFLY Energy has announced that it has received a US patent for a new carbon-foam lead-acid battery technology. The company claims that this technology will revolutionise the existing lead-acid battery market and serve applications including hybrid electric vehicles and plug-in hybrids. The battery has a lightweight carbon or graphic foam, to which the chemically active material has been applied. This foam structure increases the interface between the electrodes and the active chemistry. The carbon material prevents corrosion and sulphation build-up.
