Sustainable, Compostable, Even Edible, Packaging

Two Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute (RPI) graduates have literally grown a successful business from agricultural by-products and fungus. Ecovative's EcoCradle packaging is produced by growing fungal mycelium (mushroom roots) on a substrate of agricultural waste, such as buckwheat hulls or cotton gin trash. It can be grown to any shape (within a plastic mold) in about one week. EcoCradle is grown in the dark, and requires no watering; the process uses about one-eighth the energy required for the manufacture of synthetic packing materials.
