Plate prices jump after February mill hikes

Prices for carbon steel plate in the United States strengthened after a new round of price increases announced by mills during the week of February 22. Fastmarkets’ weekly price assessment for steel cut-to-length plate carbon grade, fob mill US climbed to $54 per hundredweight ($1,080 per short ton) on Friday February 26 from $51.50 per cwt on February 19. The assessment has soared by 116% since falling to its 2020 low of $25 per cwt in August. Data was received in a range of $51-57 per cwt, with inputs at the low end of the range reported before the late-February price increases and the high end of the range representing offers from mill sites with little spot availability.
