Car Rental Companies Go Solar and Electric

Car rental company Hertz will retrofit solar photovoltaic power systems at 16 car rental facilities by this fall, 2.3 megawatts (MW) in all. The company plans to expand the program to some of its 8,400 locations in 146 countries worldwide. In December 2010, Hertz started with a 235-kilowatt (kW) system at the Denver International Airport (Colorado, USA). The system will produce about 340,000 kilowatt-hours (kWh) per year of alternating current (AC) output, offsetting 300 metric tons of carbon dioxide emissions. Additional retrofits will be made in the US states of Arizona, California, Colorado, Georgia, Maryland, Massachusetts, New Jersey, New York, and Pennsylvania.
