A dismally low percentage of consumer electronics are recycled. According to the US Environmental Protection Agency, only 18% of 2.25 million tons of waste electronics were recycled in 2007. One of the main reasons is convenience - it's a lot easier to toss your old cell phone in the trash than to seek out somewhere to recycle it, particularly if you have to pay to do so.
