Amazon Drought Emitted More CO2 Than the United States

The 2010 great drought in the Amazon rain forest was worse than its "once-a-century" dry spell in 2005. A study published in Science found that the 2010 drought caused rainfall shortages over a 1.16 million square mile expanse of the forest, half again the area impacted by the 2005 drought. It was also more intense, causing higher tree mortality. It had three major epicenters, compared to 2005's single epicenter in the southwest Amazon basin. The 2010 drought dried up major Amazon Basin rivers, isolating thousands of people.
