The effect of various rotations and fallow periods on development of sugar beet, product quality and nematode infestation as well as soil physical parameters have been studied in the sugar beet rotation experiment Etzdorf, which had been started in 1970 on a Haplic Chernozem in the state Saxony-Anhalt, Germany. In 2006, for the first time various soil physical parameters have been analysed. The different rotations did not affect the parameters significantly. This does also apply to the total organic carbon content, which was 2.08 vol. % in sugar beet monoculture and thus only 0.16 vol. % in a rotation with only 20% sugar beet. Serious yield effects were measured if the proportion of sugar beet in the rotation was increased to 25% and more. The break in the rotation affected the yield and quality parameters. In situations with a substantial nematode infestation breaks of a minimum of three years are recommended. If this recommendation is exceeded a critical infestation with 500 eggs and larvae in 100 g soil causes yield decreases of a minimum of 5% on average, which might be higher in single years. This affects yield stability depending on seasonal weather conditions.
