38 commercial crossbred geese, 8 weeks of age, were divided into 4 groups and were given a basal diet of maize, soya protein and coconut oil (controls), or the basal diet supplemented with 1.5 g/kg choline chloride (group 2), 5 g cholesterol and 5 gcholic acid (group 3) or 5 g cholesterol, 5 g cholic acid and 1.5 g choline chloride (group 4) for 8 weeks. There were no differences among the groups in final body weight, feed intake, feed conversion efficiency or carcass weight. Liver weight and concentrations of triglycerides and cholesterol in the liver were significantly higher for groups 3 and 4 than for the other groups. These groups also had significantly higher concentrations of cholesterol in the breast muscle. Geese fed diets with cholesterol and cholic acid had increased concentrations of cholesterol, triglycerides and phospholipids in plasma and very low density lipoproteins (VLDL). Concentrations of glycerides and VLDL in the plasma and phosphatidylcholine in liver and muscle tissue were not reduced by low dietary choline concentrations in geese not given supplementary cholesterol.
