NR organises seminar on GOODS AND SERVICES TAX (GST) by SHRI KAPIL SHARMA Joint Partner , Lakshmikumaran & Sridharan Attorneys The Northern Region of AIRIA organized a seminar on GST for the benefit of its members on the subject, on Saturday, 28th January, 2017, at India Habitat Center, New Delhi. In his brief introductory speech Shri Vipan Mehta, Chairman, NR stated: ‘The Government of India has initiated a significant step in the field of indirect tax reforms in India- Goods and Services Tax very commonly termed as GST. Its genesis dates back to 2006-07. By amalgamating a large number of Central and State Taxes into a single tax, it would mitigate cascading or double taxation in a major way and pave way for a common man national market. One Nation one tax. From the consumer's point of view, the biggest advantage would be in terms of reduction in the overall tax burden on goods. Also, the actual burden of indirect taxes on goods and services would be more transparent to the consumers. Furthermore, GST when introduced would also likely to make Indian products competitive in the domestic and international markets owing to the fuller neutralizastion of input taxes across the value chain of production and distribution. In fact, the whole world is eagerly looking at India on the introduction of GST . Its impact may boost economic growth. ‘
