FINANCIAL ANALYSIS OF PILOT-SCALE EGG PRODUCTION OF SPOTTED ROSE SNAPPER, Lutjanus guttatus

A financial analysis was carried out on a pilot-scale of an egg production cycle for establishing, maintaining and spawning of captive broodstock of spotted rose snapper, Lutjanus guttatus, in Mazatlan, Mexico. Breeders were maintained for 15 months in two 18-m~3 fiberglass tanks with an open flow system and spontaneously spawned 71.28 million floating eggs during 11 months. Costs for each phase and activity are described and analyzed. Items of major operational costs were labor (36%), supplies (21%), feed (11%), and depreciation (10%). Production costs after lax were $0.96 USD per 1,000 packed floating eggs and $2,045 USD per 100,000 viable 48-h post hatching larvae at first feeding. Break-even point was 474.9 thousand packed eggs and break-even price was $0.22 USD, with an estimated net profit of $3.60 USD per thousand packed eggs. With the satisfactory results obtained, production technology could be extended to commercial scale, for which some recommendations are included.
