Bill Seeks Mandatory Public Online Access To Results of Government Funded Research

Legislation introduced in the U.S. Senate on May 2 would require researchers working for or funded by federal agencies to make their work available for free to the public on the Internet. The Federal Research Public Access Act of 2006 (S. 2695), sponsored by Sens. John Comyn III (R-Texas) and Joseph I. Lieberman (D-Conn.), would require executive agencies that fund in-house or external research to the tune of 100 million dollars to institute public access policies that would require funded researchers to submit electronic versions of their peer-reviewed papers to be included in a database to be made publicly accessible within six months.
