Effects of conditioning at 14 or 18degC on a formulated feed (5% lipid) were investigated on the lipid and fatty acid composition of pre- and post-spawning blacklip and greenlip abalones (Haliotis rubra and Haliotis laevigata). The abalones were held from spent to gravid condition; half the gravid molluscs were induced to spawn while the rest were left untreated. Samples of digestive gland, gonad and foot were then taken for analysis. Lipid contents for these tissues did not differ between blacklip and greenlip abalones. Lipid levels ranged from 30 to 32% and from 8 to 9% in the ovary and testis, respectively, while levels in the digestive gland were 14-15% and levels in the foot were 4-6%. Fatty acid profiles differed among tissues. Those of the ovary, testis and foot were characterized by high levels of linoleic, eicosapentaenoic and arachidonic acids, respectively. Proportions of linoleic and eicosapentaenoic acid in the digestive gland were between those of the ovary and testis. Culture temp. did not affect lipid or fatty acid composition in either species and spent and gravid abalones did not differ in terms of these parameters.
